[the grim encounters office]

It's always pretty quite between investigations for Murphy. It's not as if there isn't anything for the team to do - it's just that the research-and-seek-permits chunks of work aren't remotely his area of expertise. And since Caroline's been around to help he's had even less paperwork hell to help slog through, thankfully. She's much better at it than he ever was. He's taken to just hanging out in the office regardless, whenever he's not busy with some side job. (Which is, unfortunately, fairly often.)

It's just especially empty in the office this afternoon. Crane had been in earlier but had stepped out, leaving just Pendleton and Lichfield for the time being. Murphy checks on the plants and answers the phone when needed - theoretically, at least. They don't get many calls and they don't have many plants, so that's not a lot to keep him busy. And while Lichfield's busy in other parts of the office that's not something she needs his help with, really. So he pulls a chair up to one of the windows overlooking the street below and settles on playing games on his phone over the shitty wifi. It's a good place to keep an eye on things. Maybe people watch a little, but not conspicuously. Pendleton's very aware of the exact kind of neighborhood they're in. It's rough. Not the worst, but rough. Mafia turf, probably. The restaurant nearby certainly is mob-owned, judging by the types that frequent it. What particular capital-F mob family doesn't really concern him.

He pays just enough attention to make sure nothing bad is headed their way. The less he knows, the better, really.

It's still early afternoon when he spies an especially nice shiny black sedan pull up near their building. That's not really all that unusual - mob neighborhood, and all. Murphy pays it very little mind. He's got a Candy Crush level he's been stuck on for hours now. He only becomes aware of someone in the hallway just before the office door swings open.

That's a very tall handsome stranger walking in and Murphy is absolutely certain he's a mob guy. Tan skin, hawkish Italian nose, carefully slicked back black hair, nice shirt and slacks, shiny leather shoes. Really fuckin' shiny shoes. Yeah. Mafia. Probably a made guy doing well for himself, from the outfit. He's got a box tucked under an arm. Murphy discreetly texts Lichfield. caroline we got a mob guy here, if he wants to break my legs im gonna let him. Message sent.

Mr. Mafia glances around at the empty office and empty front desk before Murphy pipes up from his corner. "Hi, can I help you?"

There's a long, awkward pause while the stranger here stares down his very large nose at Murph, looking bemused. "I fuckin' hope so. Is Dr. Crane in?" He sounds good-natured about it.

"Nah, but he said he'd be back later," Murphy answers, entirely unhelpfully, he knows. "He didn't say when though." Or say anything about meeting with anyone - thanks, Crane. He continues to text Caroline, barely looking at his phone. im the worst secretary r.i.p.

Mr. Mafia chews on that for a moment. "Well. Shit," He says, closing the door behind him. "Mind if I wait?" Murphy shrugs in a nonchalant 'go ahead' kind of way - it's not like he's gonna refuse this guy. De Niro Jr, for his part, wanders over to the front desk and sets the mystery box there before taking a seat. "I brought some donuts and cannnoli," He adds after a moment. He must have noticed Murphy's squinting at it. "I didn't know if you guys" -- that was almost a 'yous guys' -- "-liked cannoli so I hedged my bets, y'know?"

"Uh...Thanks." Murphy feels stupid. He tires very hard to salvage whatever this is. "Nobody here's going to turn down pastries." Ha ha. Fuck. That's no better. This is hilariously awkward, especially for a mob run-in. This guy has the air of being important to him, but Murphy has no idea who the hell he is. And this guy knows it, too. Murphy shoots off one last text to Lichfield. baby michael corleone brought us cannoli! and donuts. get out here already if you want some because im going to eat it all before he kills me.

Well well. Someone approached me at the library about having another guest on the show. I said yes.

[loeb house investigation]

Caroline still can't quite believe it, but she's back for another investigation. She spent the last one helping Eddie in the tech van, but this time she's going to be back in the house investigating. She actually got pulled aside last time for what might have been the strangest pep talk she's ever received. From Doctor Crane no less, who informed her that the only reason she was confined to tech van duty was because other members of the crew (including the lawyer) had told him not to give heavy equipment to someone with stitches still in. That made her feel better.

But now she's allowed to actually lift things heavier than a milk jug, so it's back to work. She doesn't have any trouble getting to the location, and shows up with some delicious Mcdonald's breakfast. She parks her car and heads for the tech van, mc-whatever in hand.

[discussion post: dini house investigation]

It's that time again. Play nice, kids.

[the grim encounters office]

Caroline still can't quite believe they actually asked her to come back. But they did, and now she's on her way to the office to help with paperwork. She can't really say anything about the neighborhood, seeing as how she lives in a similar one. She's just familiar enough with the Bowery that Eddie's directions of "across from Jezebel Guns and under Maroni's" make sense to her. It doesn't take her long to find it, and she doesn't even have to spend much time under those claustrophobic glass ceiling things that she doesn't understand or like.

She pulls the door open to find a hallway leading to a bunch of empty offices, which is honestly a little creepy. In the middle there's a stairwell and a sign listing the building's occupants. There's apparently some sort of accountant somewhere on the first floor, but what Caroline's actually looking for is the listing for "Crane and Associates." And they're on the second floor. She heads up the stairs and looks for signs of life. It seems they've spread out a bit from their assigned office, but she heads there first and knocks. She has no idea if that's actually necessary, but she'd rather err on the side of politeness.

[AMA: Dr. Quinzel]

Since the Q&A with Dr. Crane went so... well, it went somewhere, we're doing another one. As promised. So you can all stop shouting at me on the forums.

For one night only, Dr. Harleen Quinzel will be answering your questions. The usual rules apply. I will delete shit without mercy.

[dini house investigation]

The rest of the day passes in the usual haze of preparation. Crane makes sure the interns have some idea of what they'll be doing in the basement tonight. Mellark is obnoxious and dim, but he can follow directions and hold a camera. Jonathan entrusts the EVP recorder to Lichfield, thank you very much. She actually seems to understand multi-syllable words. He has Quinzel give them the relevant background information on the house, and corners Lichfield later in the day to ask what sorts of questions she has planned. He likes the answers he gets. Satisfied that the interns know what they're meant to be doing, he checks on the rest of the crew. He hardly needs to; as far from their chosen professions as most of them are, they all do their jobs well. And they've been at this a little while.

In the final swirl of activity before the lockdown begins, Crane wolfs down another sandwich in between filming the last of the introductory stuff in front of the house. And then promptly ditches his tie, undoes a couple of buttons, and rolls his sleeves up. Even if Gotham heat isn't anything next to Georgia, it's still August and warm enough to make Jonathan idly wish he were the sort of person to leave the house in more casual attire from time to time. He gathers his personal set of equipment and sends out some last minute instructions and reminders to the crew. Time to get started.

[dini house investigation]

Caroline still can't quite believe she managed to land this intern job with Grim Encounters. She likes ghost stuff anyway, but she moved to Gotham not that long ago and and was excited to learn there was a local ghost hunting show. She caught a couple episodes and really liked how they did things, so when she heard they were basically always in need of interns she figured it was worth a shot. And here she is.

She arrives at the Dini house bright and early. So early, in fact, that she's able to stop at a nearby restaurant for some quick breakfast. And then it's off to check in with Eddie Nygma, who undoubtedly has a mile-long list of things for Caroline to do. she decides to go by the tech van first, but there's really no telling where he might be.

[a restaurant]

It may not be entirely surprising that Harley's one of the first of the crew members to show up for dinner, and it's probably even less surprising that she shows up with an armful of legal documents to sort through. Harvey's rather meticulous about the state of the agreements and contracts when they get to him, and after the fiasco that was the last intern, it's a task generally left to Nygma or occasionally Dr. Quinzel. And as Nygma's rather unfortunately busy putting the interns through boot camp, well... Harley cuts him a break.

She settles into the restaurant with the sort of cheerful ownership that basically everyone who works with Harley is used to, even if the waitstaff here isn't. She occupies not one but three chairs, one beside her for her briefcase and stack of paperwork, and the third to kick up her feet in. The crew members present don't even bat an eyelash. The waitress that approaches to ask them about their drinks, however, looks a little aghast.

"Might wanna wait on coming by for orders for a bit, toots." She says with a cheerful, wide-eyed grin at the waitress when she comes by. "We've got more people coming."

The waitress nods as pleasantly as she can apparently manage before retreating to rustle up their beverages. It comes across looking a shade terrified at that prospect given the amount of cameramen and techies already present, and Harley can hardly blame her.

It's entirely on purpose that they've ended up at a quiet, casual place, one they can talk shop with potentially little interruption. One that fits their catering budget, also. The side-effect of this being that Harley's not entirely sure this hole in the wall is prepared to deal with them all. Ah, well. They'll leave a nice tip.

So we've got a new round of intern potentials to go through screening.
